Three suspects charged in death of JSU student denied bond

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Three of the four suspects charged in connection to the shooting death of a Jackson State University (JSU) student appeared in court on November 10, 2025.

Marquis Scales, 24; Ziquae Amos, 21; and Jamison Kelly, Jr., 23, were denied bond. A judge determined the suspects were flight risks and dangers to the community.

Scales and Amos were both charged with murder in the death of Jaylen Burns, and Kelly was charged with accessory after the fact.

Elisha Brown, 23, was charged with accessory after the fact and hindering prosecution.

The shooting occurred at JSU on October 15, 2023. Bailey Martin, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS), said authorities responded to reports of a shooting at University Pointe Apartments. When they arrived, they found Burns suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at a hospital.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) was requested to take over the investigation on November 9, 2023. Martin said MBI worked with multiple local and federal law enforcement agencies and witnesses, which led to the arrests of the four suspects.

According to Martin, MBI has been coordinating its investigation with the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office.
