(NewsNation) — According to a new Zillow study, the color of the walls in your house may give the sale price a boost.
Nearly one-third of all homeowners paint their homes before listing them for sale. The study found that recent and prospective homebuyers prefer kitchens with a muted green color over other colors, and were willing to offer $1,597 more for homes with cabinets painted in that color. Buyers also liked navy blue bedrooms, which can increase a home’s sale price by $1,815.
“Buyers view olive green and navy blue as contemporary colors, and that can have a halo effect on their perception of the entire home,” said Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trend expert. “These shades are associated with organic modernism, an aesthetic that incorporate sustainable materials like wood and stone, and can also evoke feelings of serenity and tranquility.”

In a previous analysis, charcoal gray was a preferred color choice and remains a popular choice for a living room color, and can sell for $2,593 more.
The wrong colors, however, can also cost you thousands. Buyers would pay nearly $4,000 less for homes with a yellow kitchen or living room, and pay nearly $2,000 less for a home with a fire hydrant red bedroom or living room.
The research was conducted by Zillow’s behavioral science team, which surveyed more than 4,200 recent and prospective home buyers around the country.
