On June 5, the Cleveland Clinic agreed to a sweeping settlement deal to resolve allegations from the Trump administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) and the state of Ohio that it falsely coded insurance claims for gender-affirming care. Among key provisions of the deal — which follows a similar settlement with Texas Children’s hospital, also achieved in partnership with that state’s attorney general — the Clinic agreed to a two-decade ban on gender-affirming care for minors and agreed to spend $2 million for “detransitioning” care, to reverse gender-affirming procedures. It also paid a $300,000 penalty to the federal government and $8,000 to the state of Ohio. (Texas Children’s paid $10 million.)
