JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Veterans in Jackson received an early Thanksgiving surprise on Saturday. The VA Medical Center hosted a special drive-thru food pantry as part of a larger Veterans Day celebration.
While the VA hosts a food pantry once a month, this weekend’s event was the biggest of the year. Turkeys and traditional sides were served to roughly 500 veterans far above the typical 300 attendees.
“We actually host this food pantry once a month. This is our biggest one of the year because of the turkeys for Thanksgiving. And, we’ve got a a larger turnout than normal today,” “said Michael Renfrow, executive director of the VA Medical Center.
The event relies on donations and volunteers, including corporate partners to make it possible.
The weekend celebration will wrap up on Sunday with a car show and parade to celebrate veterans.
