Summer heat will hover over Iowa through the holiday

Iowa is seeing a steamy start to the Labor Day weekend, as the Extreme Heat Warning is being extended through tomorrow night for 13 southeast Iowa counties, for cities including Davenport, Iowa City and Burlington.

Meteorologist Mark Debruin, at the National Weather Service, says much of southern, central and eastern Iowa remains under a Heat Advisory, with daytime highs today and tomorrow expected in the 90s, and triple-digit heat indices.

“We’ll get a little bit of relief, if you can call it relief, on Sunday and Monday,” Debruin says, “but really we’re talking about highs maybe in the upper 80s and lower 90s instead of mid 90s.”

Several Iowa high schools plan to delay the start of tonight’s football games due to the heat, and fans headed to tomorrow’s season openers for the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes, both playing at home, will need to be prepared to sit in the sweltering sun.

“It’s going to be a warm one for all the football games,” Debruin says. “We could have heat indices near 100 and maybe up to 105 for some of those football games.”

A news release from the University of Iowa says fans will be permitted to enter Kinnick Stadium with unlimited sealed water bottles and empty refillable water bottles, while some four-thousand refillable water bottles will be distributed at Gates A, B and M.
