A 21-year-old has been charged with murdering his grandfather in the northeast Iowa home they shared.

Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the house in rural Black Hawk County shortly after 8:30 Saturday night and discovered the body of 75-year-old Gale Anthony Mervin. They found his 21-year-old grandson Eric Paul O’Connell the Second hiding in another room.

The deputies say there had signs of struggle in the house and O’Connell was taken by ambulance to a Waterloo hospital for treatment. According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, O’Connell admitted to officers that he killed his grandfather.
