ENFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — A state of emergency was declared in Enfield on Monday, the mayor’s office said.

The Office of Mayor W. Mondale Robinson declared the state of emergency, effective immediately, due to the widespread power outage caused by a storm on Saturday.

According to the mayor’s office, residents and businesses’ ability to access essential services has been affected after the town’s electrical infrastructure suffered a “significant disruption” from the storm.

“This situation poses a risk to public safety and well-being, especially for vulnerable populations that rely on electricity for medical needs, heating, cooling, and communication,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.

While town officials are working to restore power, protect the public, and assist those affected by the outage, the state of emergency will remain in effect until further notice, according to the mayor’s office.

“We urge all residents to remain calm, stay informed, and cooperate with emergency responders and town officials as we work to address this situation,” the mayor office said in a statement. “We will issue directives as they develop.”

Residents are asked not to call the county and state partner organizations; the mayor’s office said doing so could delay necessary resources for the town.
