BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — One brushstroke at a time, Lynae Hanson and her daughter, Madelyn continue making their mark in downtown Bismarck. For a few hours a day, the pair has been painting murals along 4th Avenue, hoping to bring others to the area.

“It’s a passion of mine. It’s something I do, every minute of every day. I wake up every day with ideas. My husband often jokes, oh no, she woke up with another idea, so I love art, and I live and breathe it,” says Hanson.

How did it all get started?

“We sketched out some really fun activities for hooping, skipping, hopping, running, playing on the sidewalk to try and get people and move in downtown Bismarck and we used pollinators and plants as our theme,” says Hanson. First, they sketched, then they chalked, then primed.
Soon, what started as an idea, will light up downtown Bismarck.
“It’s a huge moment of pride, my daughter and I have done this together. Working with her, has been an absolute joy for me,” says Hanson.
“Doing it with my mom and having a piece this big that’s going to be seen by so many people just feels like that moment of, I made it and I’m really doing what I set out to do, a long time ago,” says Madelyn.
Madelyn says she grew up surrounded by art and says this project brings her joy.
“The physical challenge kind of already got our goal, like out here, where we were already moving and we’re already down here and going through and working out kind of as we’re painting and so that was fun to switch it up and do something different,” says Madelyn. To make it extra sweet?
“They instantly starting doing all the moment and twirls and thing that were on the sidewalk,” says Hanson.
In addition to painting, Madelyn is a stay-at-home mom. Lynae says they’re calling it a Movement Maze. The murals stretch from 4th Avenue to Broadway in downtown Bismarck.
