Rep. Johnson on government shutdown

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It’s day three of the government shutdown.

The U.S. Senate failed to pass a short-term funding bill Friday afternoon.

A key issue for Democrats is extending health care tax credits.

But Republicans want to open the government before tackling health care negotiations.

“The real question is do we do these negotiations, which we have to do, while the government is shut down? Or should we do those negotiations while the government is open? And in the House, we came together on a bipartisan basis and said we should do these negotiations while the government is open,” Rep. Dusty Johnson said.

KELOLAND News asked people what they think of the ongoing shutdown.

“My thoughts are everyone in D.C., regardless of party, needs to actually get beyond this. It’s ridiculous that everyone’s being punished because they’re arguing like children,” said Phil Yost who’s visiting South Dakota.

“I totally support the decision that our senators have made to shut it down without the appropriate continuing resolution. That was a pretty easy decision to make to give everyone time to work out some of the bigger details,” said Estelle Conover whose visiting South Dakota.

As long as the debate continues in D.C., people are going to feel the impacts.

“There are 1,000 little ways in which the lives of South Dakotans can be frustrated by a government shutdown. The big, big problem, the looming landmine is on October 16th, federal workers, civilian, those in uniform are not going to get paid if we don’t take care of our business,” Johnson said.

The next vote is not expected until Monday.
