SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Kids are out of school for the summer, and that means food organizations could see a greater need.
As summer approaches and kids are out of school, many families are feeling added strain on their food budgets.
Are Sioux Falls pools seeing attendance growth?
“We can see some spikes during those times where they may need to have access to additional food to get through the week,” Feeding South Dakota CEO, Lori Dykstra said.
To help meet that need, the Sioux Falls School District is providing free breakfast and lunch for students throughout the summer.
“We really hope that kiddos take advantage of that. We know that they go home on the weekends and need additional food, so they can also get our backpacks at those sites and take it home and have food for over the weekend,” Dykstra said.
Dykstra says many families are struggling more than ever before.
“With the rising price of gas and groceries and all the things, we see that families are stretching their dollars even further,” Dykstra said.
At the same time, Feeding South Dakota says summer also brings an increase in volunteers, especially with school being out.
“We get to see some of those youth volunteering, which is awesome for me. I love seeing our youth give back to their communities,” Dykstra said.
The organization recently wrapped up the Stamp Out Hunger campaign with postal carriers, collecting more than 45,000 pounds of food, donations that will help support families throughout the summer months.
“Donations of food and funds are how we get this work done. And so we’re going to utilize that food, get it out to our families in need as soon as possible,” Dykstra said.
