Bowling Green had little trouble moving the ball against highly-rated Scott County on Friday night.
But as easy as it looked for the Purples drive up and down the field, stopping the Cardinals’ grinding offense proved even tougher for Bowling Green (1-2) in a 51-44 home loss.
Jett Reynolds ran for three touchdowns, Zyrek Burton added two rushing scores and BG sophomore quarterback Anthony Davis sliced up the Cardinals for 327 passing yards and a score — it still wasn’t enough.
Scott County (3-0) got a monster night from senior running back Timothy Emongo, a Ball State commit who ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns, plus caught a pair of touchdown passes in the matchup of Class 5A programs.
“They were everything I thought they would be,” Bowling Green coach Mark Spader said. “I’m glad our team showed up tonight. After last week (a 39-10 road loss at St. Xavier) I was really disappointed, but we worked hard all week — got out in the heat and put our work in and I’m proud of how our kids came here ready to roll tonight. Right now they’re one of the measuring sticks in (Class 5A). I told our kids I hope we can continue to improve each week and meet up with them down the road.”
The Cardinals put points on the scoreboard on their first eight drives, with only the last possession resulting in no score as Scott County ran out the clock to finish off the victory. Behind Emongo, who also caught four passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns, Scott County racked up 558 yards of total offense with 402 rushing yards and another 156 passing.

The Purples won the opening coin toss and elected to take the ball — a wise move, as Davis led a 15-play, 81-yard drive capped by Zyrek Burton’s 3-yard touchdown run to grab an early lead.
Scott County answered with three straight first-down runs on the ensuing possession, with quarterback Charlie Ellison finishing the scoring drive with a 7-yard touchdown dash.
Bowling Green swung right back, with Davis (18-of-32 passing) hitting Cole Dorsey on a 58-yard touchdown pass to put the Purples back up 14-7 on the first play of the second quarter.
Ellison found Emongo for a 30-yard touchdown strike to knot the game at 14-all, then the Purples made a costly mistake by fumbling away the ensuing kickoff. Two plays later, Emongo got loose again for a 26-yard touchdown run that gave the Cardinals their first lead at 21-14.
“It was like a tennis match,” Spader said. “We won the toss and we took the ball, which I never do that but I just felt like we really had a chance to establish ourselves. And we did, we drove down and took the lead. And that was kind of a service break in there when we put the ball on the ground. And they took care of the ball tonight.”
The Purples regrouped and charged right back with an 80-yard scoring drive — Jett Reynolds did the bulk of the work with a 50-yard touchdown run that evened the game at 21-all with 4:53 left in the first half.
Scott County drove to BG’s red zone on the next drive, but the Purples managed to hold the Cardinals out of the end zone settle for a Logan Harris 23-yard field goal with 14 seconds before halftime.
The lead grew to 10 for the Cardinals after first possession of the second half, as Emongo once more lit up the Purples with a 61-yard touchdown reception.
“He’s something else with the ball,” Spader said. “I mean, he’s got to be a Mr. Kentucky candidate. If we meet up with them again, we’ve got to find a way to slow him down.”
Bowling Green answered with a 2-yard touchdown run by Reynolds, then the Purples pulled off a successful onside kick after Scott was assessed a 15-yard facemask penalty during Reynolds’ run. It only took five plays for BG to cover 34 yards, with Reynolds tallying his third touchdown run of the night with a 5-yard score that erased a 10-point deficit and put the hosts ahead 35-31 with 3:39 left in the third.
“We talked about opening the half with it, but I just didn’t like putting our defense in that situation,” Spader said. “Once they did what they did … even without the penalty, we were going to do our surprise kick. The penalty just helped it out.”
Scott County went 80 yards on the next possession, with Ellison (6-of-11 passing for 156 yards) hooking up with tight end Anderson Owens on a 19-yard touchdown strike.
The Purples again snatched back the lead as Burton finished off an 80-yard scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown run — a 61-yard completion from Davis to Issac Wilson was the big play on the drive that put BG back up 41-37 with 6:41 to go.
Emongo’s 13-yard touchdown run pushed the Cardinals back in from 44-41, then Scott’s defense finally came up with a stop when Owens tracked down a scrambling Davis on fourth-and-long for a sack.
On the next play, Emongo again sprang free for a 34-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead back to 10 with 2:23 to play.
The Purples still weren’t done, moving to the Scott 22 before three straight incompletions set up a fourth-and-10. Needing two scores, BG got one when Kipton Walden hit a 39-yard field goal to trim the deficit to seven (51-44) with 50 seconds to play.
BG once more tried an onside kick, but the Cardinals covered it and ran out the clock for the win.
Skyler Way added 116 rushing yards for Scott.
Reynolds finished with a team-high 99 rushing yards for the Purples. Ja’Caurie Woodard had five catches for 56 yards.
Bowling Green hosts crosstown rival South Warren on Sept. 11.
