PERU — A local man was arrested on multiple charges Friday after allegedly confronting police while armed with weapons, damaging a police cruiser and trashing property inside the jail.
Bert Holmquist, 43, was charged following the 10 a.m. incident with two counts of assault and aggravated criminal mischief, terrorizing, criminal mischief, possession of a firearm by a felon and refusing to submit to arrest, a news release from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said.
The confrontation with Holmquist began when deputies went to Peru for a report of a man damaging cars.
Deputies were quickly led to Holmquist as a suspect, according to the news release. When they went to his home, they found Holmquist brandishing an ax and a machete.
Deputies were able to arrest Holmquist, but he soon started thrashing in the back of a cruiser, breaking out the rear window of the Chevrolet Tahoe.
Two deputies suffered minor injuries while trying to get Holmquist under control, the release said. They were treated and released at the scene while Holmquist was taken to a hospital before he was moved to the Oxford County Jail in Paris.
At the jail, Holmquist “continued his aggressive behavior and damaged property inside the facility,” according to the news release.
It said more charges are likely to be filed.
Holmquist has a criminal history in the area that includes convictions for assault and drug possession.
He is expected to make an appearance next week in Paris District Court.
