FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — It’s been two years since its adoption, and yet, more than 20 cities across the state of Minnesota are still not flying the new state flag.

The flag replaced the last design, adopted in 1983.

The cities still flying that flag say they’re doing so because they were not consulted in the design process for the new flag.

Public opinion has been mixed.

Some have embraced the change, and others have pushed back – with some in the latter category deeming the new flag too “politically correct”.

One MSUM professor believes this is not something that should be as big an issue as it has become.

“In terms of having an impact politically, gas is $4 a gallon. Housing is an issue in terms of affordability. That’s the sort of thing people want their elected officials talking about in the fall. Not the state flag,” said Barbara Headrick, MSUM.

Currently, one county in Minnesota is looking at approving whether they will fly the new state flag. That decision is to be made as early as next week.
