Saving A Place For You will host a Nov. 8 Friendsgiving open house to introduce its new veterans housing program and build community support.
DOVER, Del. — A new transitional home for veterans experiencing homelessness is opening its doors in Dover, offering up to a year of stable housing while helping residents connect with services and work toward independent living.
Saving A Place For You, Inc., a Delaware nonprofit founded last year, will introduce the home to the broader community during a Friendsgiving Open House from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at 21 S. Saulsbury Road.
The event will give veterans, families, nonprofit organizations, businesses, potential donors and other community members an opportunity to tour the home, meet the organization’s leaders and learn about housing and support available to veterans.
“Our veterans have given so much in service to our country, and they deserve to know that their service is remembered and that their community has not forgotten them,” founder Electa Thompkins said.
“This home represents more than a roof over someone’s head,” she said. “It represents hope, dignity, and an opportunity for a fresh start.”
A path toward independence
Saving A Place For You was founded in October 2025 by Thompkins and Sadé Truiett in response to the need for safe housing and additional support for veterans navigating the transition to civilian life or experiencing housing instability.
The organization says eligible veterans may stay in its transitional housing program for up to one year. During that period, residents can be connected with supportive services, community resources and personal-development opportunities intended to help them establish longer-term stability.
The organization also announced that it will waive its application fee for veterans seeking transitional housing, an effort intended to reduce one potential barrier for those seeking help.
Building a community of support
Truiett, the organization’s co-founder, said opening the home is only one part of a broader effort to establish partnerships among organizations, businesses and individuals interested in supporting veterans.
“Opening the doors to our transitional home is an important milestone, but our vision extends far beyond the walls of this building,” Truiett said.
“We want to build a community of people and organizations who are willing to stand alongside veterans as they navigate their next chapter.”
The Friendsgiving gathering is intended in part to build that network.
Guests will be able to tour the residence, meet board and leadership members and learn about opportunities to volunteer, donate, share resources or establish community partnerships.
For veterans who may need housing, organizers will also provide information about eligibility, the application process and available resources.
Honoring service, providing hope
The timing of the open house, shortly before Veterans Day and the Thanksgiving season, offers an opportunity to recognize veterans’ service while drawing attention to the need for stable housing and community support.
Saving A Place For You describes its mission with the phrase “Honoring Service, Providing Hope,” emphasizing both immediate housing needs and the longer-term goal of helping veterans regain independence.
Thompkins said the goal is to create a place where veterans feel supported while determining what comes next.
“We want veterans to know that there is a place where they can feel welcomed, supported and encouraged as they take their next steps,” she said.
