FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A man is facing a murder charge in connection with a deadly pedestrian crash in Fayetteville Monday afternoon after police said they determined the pedestrian was stabbed before being hit by a car.
According to the Fayetteville Police Department, officers responded around noon to Bragg Boulevard near the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway and found a man who had been hit by passing motorist.
Police said the man, identified as 60-year-old Raymond Mathews, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation determined Mathews was suffering from stab wounds prior to the crash, which led to him entering the busy road, according to Fayetteville police.
According to a warrant filed by Fayetteville police, 36-year-old Joshua Montez Emerson was identified as the suspect in the stabbing. He is charged with first-degree murder.
Court records show Emerson was arrested on Monday. He was not given bond.
Emerson made his first appearance in Cumberland County Court on Tuesday and is scheduled to return on Sept. 30, according to records.
