SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Memorial Day is right around the corner, and events are scheduled in several cities around South Dakota.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 26.

Sioux Falls

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting a Memorial Day program on Monday, May 26, at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery, located at 25965 477th Avenue, Sioux Falls. The program will begin at 12:00 p.m. Former District 18 Senator Jean Hunhoff will be the keynote speaker.

Fleet Farm stores will host in Taps Across America, where musicians perform a memorial service, at 3035 West Fleet Street, Sioux Falls, 3:00 p.m.

Rapid City

A Memorial Day 5k, 10k, and 15k will take place at Founder’s Park in Rapid City at 8:00 a.m. People can sign up for the race on the Run Sign Up website.

The Black Hills War Monument Association will hold a ceremony honoring fallen Black Hills military members who died in service from WWI to the present. The ceremony is at 9:00 a.m. at the Monument site in Memorial Park.

Brookings

The ROAM Ruck Club is having a Memorial Day Ruck/Walk The walk starts at 10:00 a.m. Larson’s Park.

Mitchell

A Memorial Day service will be held Monday beginning at 9:15 a.m. at the American Legion Cemetery, continuing at 9:30 a.m. at the Navy Lagoon, 9:40 a.m. at the Grand Army of the Republic site, and concluding at 10 a.m. at the Serviceman’s Cemetery. State Rep. Jeff Bathke will deliver remarks, with Craig Bennett serving as master of ceremonies. Music will be provided by the Mitchell City Band, and Taps will be performed by Kris Enga and Colin Pickett.

Sturgis

A Memorial Day commemoration takes place May 26 in Sturgis.  A parade begins at 10:30 a.m., departing from VFW post on Fawn River Road, then proceeding north on Nottawa Street to Oaklawn Park, where the ceremony begins at 11 a.m. The featured speaker is Brad Urick, sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps.

Hot Springs

Hot Springs will host several events over Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, May 24 they will begin the day with placing flags at US Veterans Cemetery and the Evergreen Cemetery at 9 a.m. They will then host Military Days at Fall River Pioneer Museum from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as hosting Military Days at World Fossil Finder Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will then hold a Salute to Valor Parade (Start at Evans Plunge) at 1 p.m.

On Monday, May 26, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. they will hold the Stars, Stripes and Steps Race (5K only) at Centennial Park, and from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. there will be a Memorial Day Veteran’s Program at the State Veterans Home.  

Madison

The VFW of Madison will be hosting a Memorial Day celebration on May 30th at 10:00 am in memory of many and in honor of all.

Humboldt

The American Legion is hosting a Memorial Day Program and potluck on Memorial Day, May 26, 2025, starting at 10 am at the Humboldt Community Center. The program will start at the community center, move to the cemeteries, and conclude with a potluck back at the community center.

Dell Rapids

Dell Rapids held many different programs and services throughout the day for Memorial Day.  Logan Reformed Cemetery held a service at 7:50 a.m. Stordahl Cemetery then had a service at 8:25 a.m. followed by a service at Willow Creek Cemetery at 8:55 a.m.

There will also be a Memorial Day Parade, starting on 4th St in Dell Rapids at 10:00 a.m.  Ceremonies followed the parade at Dell Rapids City Park after the parade.

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore kicks off their Evening Lighting Ceremony the day before Memorial Day through September 30 each year. From May through early August, the ceremony starts nightly at 9 p.m., and from early August through September 30, it starts nightly at 8 p.m. From October through May, there is no ceremony, but the sculpture is illuminated nightly at sunset.
