I read with interest the article in Monday’s Living section regarding the reasons for backing into parking spaces (“Why do so many people in Louisiana back into parking spaces, especially trucks?”).

I didn’t realize, although it makes sense, that emergency and military vehicles were specifically advised to do so. However, I think that the article missed one other very important reason.

Until vehicles were equipped with rear cross-traffic alert systems, if you were parked facing inward between two trucks or SUVs, you couldn’t tell what was coming behind you until you were almost all the way out of the parking space.
