The decision in the Karmelo Anthony murder of Austin Metcalf and the opening of the World Cup revisited with a blast my son Spencer’s death as he worked the bar at Cat’s Meow on Bourbon Street on March 20, 2022.
He was shot by an amoeba-brained fool standing on Bourbon Street at 2 a.m. Her blood was hot, and someone had to pay. My son’s heart stopped the 40-caliber bullet she fired into a crowded bar.
Spencer had been to six previous World Cups and most certainly would have been at this one.
In 2022, 280 people were slain in New Orleans, mostly for no reason. No matter how you might feel about the murder verdict of guilty and the 35-year sentence given Anthony, the family and friends of Metcalf will never find happiness nor peace ever again.
Their loss cannot even begin to be understood unless you are in the same boat as his family and loved ones. When Anthony plunged his knife into the heart of one he did not even know and killed him, he also killed Metcalf’s mom and dad. Oh, they will go on breathing, as will Anthony, but they will never again experience joy and peace in their lives.
Please think about this as the murders keep piling up. No matter the social standing of the victim, the pain and grief are off the charts for the families left behind.
It is now going on five years since we lost our son and only child, and so few days that we don’t cry. We cannot continue accepting murder as the price of doing business.
