CASPER, Wyo. –– Wednesday, April 15, before midnight is the deadline to file taxes for 2026.
According to the IRS, the deadline for extensions requests is also on April 15. Extensions can be filed for a return, and not for extra time to pay if taxes are owed, they said. Options are available for those who can’t pay their full balance.
Extensions can be filed online by visiting the IRS website.
According to the IRS, all forms must be postmarked before midnight to be accepted. However, recent changes to the USPS could affect when a form is postmarked.
“Instead of reflecting the date when you drop your mail in a mailbox or hand it to a carrier, a postmark may reflect when the mail is first processed at a USPS facility,” they said. “While these changes are intended to improve mail processing efficiency at limited post offices, they may have unintended consequences for taxpayers who rely on the mail to file returns or send payments, depending on how the USPS implements its new procedures.”
Relying on a mailbox alone while nearing the deadline may not be enough to ensure a timely postmark. The USPS recommends approaching the counter and requesting an attendant to hand-cancel the envelope. There is no additional charge for the request, they said.
