SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Harvest continues in KELOLAND.
Whether you’re behind the wheel of a combine or you have a different role in the industry, you could get up to five free counseling sessions.
“We can support farmers, children of farmers, anybody in the ag industry, and I think this is such an important time as it’s fall and the markets and things like that, there are many different stressors happening in the agriculture world,” Rising Hope Counseling Founder Jill Janecke said.
Rising Hope Counseling, which has locations all over South Dakota, is providing the service thanks to a partnership with SDSU Extension.
Andrea Bjornestad, an SDSU Extension Mental Health Specialist, says the program is for South Dakotans.

“Maybe you’re not struggling with anxiety or depression, but you’re maybe having relationship issues or the farm family is lacking communication or there’s just challenges with physical health, maybe some behaviors with children, you can go talk to a counselor about those things,'” Bjornestad said.
People who take advantage of the program can do the sessions in person or through telehealth.
“If you’re out doing chores or maybe in the combine right now harvesting,” Janecke said.
Janecke says your brain health is just as important as any other organ in your body.
“I understand in the farming industry, it can be a silent stress, you know, when you are amongst your community and not wanting people to know you’re going through something, so having this confidential, nonjudgmental space to be able to talk about what’s happening is so important for mental health,” Janecke said.
Bjornestad says the funding comes from a USDA grant.
