Former KXNO hosts find new home with digital radio show
Sean Roberts and Lucas Strain are bringing their new ‘Beyond the Bench’ show to the Rush Radio Network after iHeart Media layoffs at KXNO.
DES MOINES, Iowa —
The afternoon of Tuesday, June 23, Sean Roberts and Lucas Strain did the last hour of their popular afternoon radio show ‘Off the Bench’ knowing it would be their final show on KXNO.
Companywide iHeart Media layoffs swept through the sports talk radio station in Des Moines, taking the pair off the air.
“We got the news that one other colleague got laid off like with 40 minutes left in our show. And it’s a great thing we had an interview, because I was crying throughout the entire segment, ’cause I knew that it was going to happen,” Strain said. “And two minutes after the show ends, Sean gets a phone call.”
“Eventually, I think anyone that works in the media business, especially in radio, I think at some point you’re going to come across layoffs,” Roberts said. “No matter how good or great things were. I miss being able to talk into a microphone. I’ve been kind of lost, honestly.”
The two will team up again starting Monday for a digital radio show titled ‘Beyond the Bench.’ It will air weekdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on the Rush Radio Network.
“Sean and I have a lot of fun together, but it’s the people who listen and people who interact is what really makes it great,” Strain said. “The Bench Mob is what makes it great. So, happily, hopefully, the Bench Mob is just going to come with us.”
