Fire hydrant fixed after citizen raises concerns

INDIANAPOLIS— A leaking fire hydrant is now fixed at an eastside apartment complex following concerns from renters and questions from Indiana’s I-Team.

It’s an update to a story Indiana’s I-Team first reported last month about a leaking fire hydrant at Blackburn Terrace, an apartment complex on the east side of Indianapolis.

Kyle Drew contacted Indiana’s I-Team for help after he said apartment management was slow to respond.

“We just need an answer,” said Drew.

When Indiana’s I-Team stopped by last month, the fire hydrant on his street was leaking water into the grass, onto the sidewalk, and into the street.

Drew was worried about the mess, wasted water, and if firefighters can even use the hydrant.

“If it’s leaking this much, they might not even be able to get water out at this point,” said Drew.

He was also concerned about the water making potholes worse or disguising them.

When Indiana’s I-Team came out to the complex on October 27, several potholes had been repaired.

While most fire hydrants in Central Indiana are owned and maintained by Citizens Energy, this hydrant is considered private.

Blackburn Terrace is managed by SHP Management Corp.

We have not received a response to our request for comment on the repair.

If you have a leaking hydrant in your neighborhood, contact your water utility and if you’re a renter — also contact your property manager.
