ELKHART, Ind. (WISH) — The Elkhart County Homicide Unit said it is investigating a late Monday morning shooting that left a 21-year-old woman dead.

An Elkhart Police Department press release said just before 11:40 a.m. Monday, the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a report of a shooting in the 300 block of Pierre Moran Drive. Officers and other first responders were dispatched to the scene and found a woman who’d been shot inside a home.

Elkhart Fire Department medics took the woman, identified as 21-year-old Jessica Martinez of Elkhart, to the hospital where she died.

Homicide Unit detectives arrested a 17-year-old male on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide in connection to this shooting. Police took him to the Elkhart County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police said they believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
