For the Flanders family, farming is more than a job; it is a legacy spanning seven generations. Based in Noblesville, the family now channels centuries of agricultural expertise into their business, Simply From Scratch.
The company connects local producers with central Indiana residents looking for transparency and healthy food.
Suzanne and Lauren Flanders lead the venture, which grew from an encounter with an Amish family in Shipshewana more than 30 years ago. Suzanne Flanders recalled a pivotal moment when she was offered milk that didn’t cause her usual digestive discomfort.
The milk was lightly pasteurized and non-homogenized. That discovery inspired her to bring high-quality dairy products to central Indiana. She realized that how food is processed matters as much as where it is grown.
The business quickly expanded beyond dairy. Suzanne, a registered dietitian, ensured the company’s name reflected its core mission.
The community drives the company’s growth. Today, Simply From Scratch boasts a catalog of more than 50 products.
The family sources these products from trusted local partners or produces them on their own farm to meet rising demand. Whether it is local produce or prepared goods, every item reflects a commitment to quality.
Lauren Flanders, who has a background in agricultural education, views the business as a platform for advocacy. She aims to help people become confident consumers.
“By teaching people to read labels and understand where their food comes from, consumers can better advocate for the local agricultural industry,” Lauren said.
One of the most recognizable parts of the business is “Bruno,” a bright green school bus converted into a mobile market. Bruno provides a heated, mobile space for customers after outdoor markets close in mid-October.
Among their diverse offerings, frozen prepared meals have become the most popular choice over the last year. These meals cater to young families seeking high-quality nutrition without a time-consuming cleanup.
The Flanders family continues to innovate as it grows its legacy in Noblesville.
