An intoxicated Fall River police officer invaded a home early Tuesday morning in search for a woman who did not live there.

The incident happened in the early morning hours of May 27, according to the Fall River Police Department.

A man, later identified as a Fall River officer, was banging on the door of a home in the city and asking for a woman by name, the department said.

The person inside the home called for help, and after dispatchers said officers were on the way, they hung up the phone.

However, the officer — whom the person in the home did not know — then forcibly entered the house, the department said.

The officer kept asking for a woman by name, but after the person in the home told him that woman did not live there, the officer left the home on foot, the department said.

First responders arrived shortly after and the person in the home described the man to them. They said he appeared heavily intoxicated on alcohol and was “confused or mistaken about the location,” the department said.

While the first responders were still on scene, other police officers found the man about a half-block away. He was taken into custody and later identified as a member of the Fall River Police Department, the department said.

Though it’s “common practice” for law enforcement to use discretion and find medical treatment for people who are intoxicated, a criminal complaint report was filed against the officer given “the higher standard to which officers are held,” the department said. The charges brought against him were not announced.

The officer, who has not yet been identified, is expected to be arraigned and his name ”will be released upon arraignment,” the department said.
