MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI — Shovels are now in the dirt for the highly anticipated Costco coming to Fruitport Township.
Construction workers this week installed a large sign announcing, “Costco Wholesale Coming Soon,” on an approximately 32-acre plot of land on Harvey Street near Harmony Lake Apartments.
Costco declined to give further details at the time of publishing.
Speculation about when Costco was coming to the township has been buzzing ever since the retail giant bought the former Fruitport Golf Course site from Grand Haven-based developer Cherette Group in January.
The company does not comment on new developments longer than three months in advance of opening, according to its website. The current list of upcoming locations does not include Fruitport Township or anywhere else in Michigan.
Costco is just the latest new development Cherette Group has brought to the 115-acre former golf course at 6334 Harvey St.
The 217-unit Harmony Lake Apartments was the first development the group announced for the site in 2021 and the first major investment proposed for the township’s downtown development district, which captures increases in property taxes to pay for infrastructure within the district.
The group also sold a parcel on the site to Wyoming-based JTB Homes, which is currently building 180 single-family homes.
