ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Cibola National Forest will start Stage 1 fire restrictions on Friday, limiting campfires to developed sites with agency fire rings or grills.
The Forest Service said the restrictions will start May 8 at 8 a.m. and cover the Mt. Taylor, Magdalena, Mountainair and Sandia ranger districts through Aug. 31 unless officials lift them earlier.
The Forest Service said Stage 1 restrictions allow fires, campfires, charcoal grills and coal and wood stoves only in developed campsites and picnic areas where agency-built fire rings or grills are available.
Campfires are banned at all dispersed camping sites under Stage 1 restrictions. Propane stoves, lanterns and heaters may be used in areas cleared of flammable materials within 3 feet if they meet manufacturer safety specifications and have on and off switches.
Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or buildings and developed recreation sites. Chainsaw use is still allowed.
The forest said leaving a campfire unattended is illegal year-round. Campfires must be dead out and cold to the touch before people leave. Fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices are always banned on national forests.
