That is all it took for the Carrington Cardinals on Friday night in a 38-8 win over the Turtle Mountain Braves for their second consecutive victory.
The avalanche started immediately, after a Braves three-and-out and 26 yard punt return by freshman Krew Wolsky, the Cards (2-4, 2-2 Region 2A) took just three plays to score, with senior Gabe Clifton scoring his third touchdown of the season on a twelve yard run for a 7-0 lead. The Braves (0-6, 0-4 Region 2A), who have lost 23 straight and 47 of their last 50, went three and out again and on the first play, Kallen Wolsky raced 61 yards for his third touchdown of the season and it was 14-0.
Turtle Mountain started the next drive at the 29 yard line and immediately snapped the ball over QB Gerod Wilkie Jr’s head twice, the second of which cleared the end zone for a safety and five minutes in, Carrington led 16-0. Meanwhile, the Cardinal defense completely shut down the Braves, who had negative 30 yards against the starting defense for Carrington.
After a couple of calls went against Carrington late in the second quarter, including a disappointing pass interference call on junior Jaxton Peltier on third down, fellow junior Hayden Hagel picked off a pass and returned it to the 17, and from there Kallen scored his second touchdown, a five-yard burst to extend the halftime lead to 24-0. For the game, Carrington ran for 330 yards and over the last two weeks they have racked up 732 rushing yards total.
Carrington added second half scores from Clifton and Emery Patzer on the ground before Wilkie found Ethan Boyer against the reserves from twelve yards out to set the final score. The entire game, from kickoff to final buzzer, went from 6:57pm to 8:34pm.
