SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — On all three levels of First Lutheran Church, there are rooms filled with homemade crafts, food and antiques. This annual fall Bazaar has been going on for decades.

“It is a wonderful day,” said Elizabeth Wood, who runs the apron shop and Christ Corner. “We consider it just a good home coming to people. So that they can know that the love of Jesus is here for them.”

Wood works year-round to make aprons for the Bazaar. But the money that she gets at the event isn’t for her.

“We distribute the proceeds to go to different charities in Sioux Falls,” said Wood. “And so, each year, depending on who has a need in the community, we give money to all various charities.”

At the market, there are many cultural traditions, including Norwegian lefse and a Scandinavian buffet. Some volunteers are wearing Norwegian bunads.

“I started making it a year ago, and I finished in May in time for Syttende Mai,” said Norma Barnes, a volunteer at the Bazaar. “So, I got all the materials from Norway, and I did all the embroidery and everything myself.”

The church was packed with people eating a hot meal, browsing the shops or doing some Christmas shopping. Crystal Ockenfuss came from California to visit a friend.

“I told her I want to do something authentic South Dakotan, because I’ve never been to South Dakota before,” said Crystal Ockenfuss, a shopper at the Bazaar. “And we settled on the church Bazaar. And I have to say, this is the most fun I’ve had in, like, ages.”

Although she loves many of the shops, there is one that sticks out.

“The quilting room just took my breath away. Everybody should be so proud here. They’re doing such beautiful work,” said Ockenfuss.

And all in the name of a good cause.
