A 94-mile flight from Juneau to Sitka could soon earn travelers less than one-fifth the loyalty points they’re accustomed to collecting, unless they make a change to their Alaska Airlines rewards account before their next trip.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, the airline will allow members of its Atmos Rewards program to choose how they earn points: by distance traveled, ticket price or the number of flights taken. In Southeast Alaska, where short flights connect communities separated by water and mountains, the change could have particular consequences.

Under the new system, an eligible Juneau-to-Sitka flight would earn approximately 94 points using the distance-based method, compared with 500 points for travelers selecting the flight-segment option. The difference is especially significant for Southeast passengers who make frequent trips.

Any Atmos Rewards members who don’t select a new earning method will automatically continue earning points based on distance traveled.

In announcing the program’s expansion Sept. 29, Alaska Airlines said the three choices are intended to accommodate passengers with different travel patterns as the company develops its combined loyalty program with Hawaiian Airlines.

Brett Catlin, Alaska Airlines’ senior vice president of network, loyalty and partnerships, said the expansion is designed to give customers more flexibility across the airline’s growing network.

In an analysis published by Nate Vallier, a travel advisor with Alaska Travel Desk in Juneau and Skagway, Vallier compared the current system with next year’s three available options using Southeast routes and longer trips to illustrate how the choice can affect rewards.

Currently, eligible regular economy tickets earn a minimum of 500 points for flights shorter than 500 miles, which will no longer apply to travelers selecting distance-based earning in 2027.

The difference could accumulate quickly for passengers flying between Juneau and Sitka. Ten eligible one-way flights would earn approximately 940 points using distance, compared with 5,000 points under the segment method. A round trip between the two communities would produce roughly 188 points under the distance option, or 1,000 points using segments.

Vallier’s analysis encourages travelers to consider their usual routes before selecting a method, particularly if earning frequent-flyer status is important to them. The calculations suggest that passengers making repeated short trips may benefit from earning by segment, while those traveling farther or purchasing higher-priced tickets could collect more points through the other options.

However, passengers who regularly travel outside Southeast Alaska might find another option more rewarding. Alaska Airlines will also allow members to earn five points for every dollar spent on eligible airfare, excluding taxes and fees. A ticket with a qualifying base fare of $200, for example, would generate 1,000 points. That would outperform the flat 500-point segment option, regardless of the flight’s distance.

Longer journeys, such as a Juneau-to-Seattle flight, covers approximately 950 miles, meaning distance-based earning could provide nearly twice as many points as the segment option for an eligible ticket. Travelers connecting through multiple airports may also need to examine their itineraries carefully, since the segment method awards points for each eligible flight rather than the total distance of a journey.

The changes affect both redeemable rewards points, which members can use toward future travel, and status points, which determine eligibility for frequent-flyer benefits.

Alaska Airlines’ Saver fare rules state that when booked after June 11, 2026, for travel beginning Aug. 1, 2026, those tickets do not earn Atmos Rewards points or status points. Passengers buying the airline’s lowest-priced tickets should therefore check their eligibility before comparing the three earning methods.

However, earning depends on the carrier and booking arrangement. Alaska’s rules provide different treatment for certain tickets purchased directly from partner airlines, even when a member has selected price-based earning. Despite those differences, travelers aren’t permanently committed to their first selection.

Alaska Airlines says members can change their earning preference once per calendar year, with the new method applying to future flights. Existing members can make their initial choice now, while those joining the program in 2027 will default to price-based earning.

The airline also offers its Club 49 program for Alaska residents, which provides separate resident benefits including baggage allowances. Those benefits are not replaced by the new points-earning choices.

With the new rules taking effect at the beginning of next year, Southeast passengers have time to review their travel plans and decide which method is likely to reward them most. Members can review their options through their Atmos Rewards accounts on Alaska Airlines’ website.
