Two villages with 2,500 residents transferred from Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan, handover process begins
AKIPRESS.COM – The official procedure for transferring the villages of Chon-Gara and Tash-Tobo from Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan has begun, the press service of the Batken regional government reported.
The process is being carried out as part of agreements on the delimitation of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek state border and includes organizational and technical work related to the exchange of land plots.
A joint working commission meeting was held on July 24, 2026, in Kadamjay district to address issues including determining the legal status of residents of the exchanged territories, possible relocation procedures, and the settlement of property, economic, and other matters.
On August 3, 2026, a joint working group from both countries continued work on the ground conducting public awareness meetings. The group is led by first deputy governor of Batken region Baktybek Toksonbaev and deputy head of Uzbekistan’s Department of Migration and Personalization Behzod Saifullaev.
According to the Batken regional administration, during the border delimitation process, the villages of Chon-Gara and Tash-Tobo, previously part of Uzbekistan’s Fergana region, were transferred to Kyrgyzstan. The villages are mainly inhabited by ethnic Kyrgyz, with around 2,500 residents living there, according to preliminary data.
Registration procedures are currently underway. At the next stage, residents will undergo procedures established by Kyrgyz legislation to obtain citizenship.
Under the agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan will transfer an equivalent land plot of the same area from the state border zone to Uzbekistan in exchange for the two villages.
