Torrential rains trigger deadly floods affecting thousands in northeast India
AKIPRESS.COM – Persistent torrential rains have triggered severe floods across the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, claiming three lives, the Hindustan Times reported.
The severe weather has impacted a total of 22,120 local residents.
Six districts have been heavily affected by the flooding, with Dhemaji district recording the highest number of victims at 15,400 people.
Local authorities stated that floodwaters have submerged 96 villages and damaged around 1,690 hectares of agricultural land.
The rising waters also caused a partial collapse of a railway bridge that was built back in 1965.
Displaced residents are currently being housed in temporary relief camps, and the flooding has affected more than 48,000 animals.
Forecasters have issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, which could trigger additional landslides and worsening flood conditions.
