Kyrgyzstan elected as non-permanent member of UN Security Council
AKIPRESS.COM – Kyrgyzstan will become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time.
The country achieved this on its fourth attempt.
“We will be writing a new page in the history of the UN. Congratulations, compatriots!” President Sadyr Japarov wrote.
Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines competed for the seat representing the Asia-Pacific region. Bishkek received 142 votes, while Manila received 49 votes.
The UN General Assembly elected five new non-permanent members of the Security Council for 2027–2028. Following the vote, Austria, Portugal, Zimbabwe, Trinidad and Tobago, and Kyrgyzstan received seats on the Security Council.
The new members will replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia. Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia will retain their status as non-permanent members of the Security Council.
