Tonga’s passport is ranked 74th globally in the current Tonga passport ranking, with a mobility score of 124 and access to 62.6% of the destinations measured in the report. The total is made up of 80 visa-free destinations, 39 destinations available through visa on arrival or other facilitated-entry arrangements, and five destinations requiring an electronic travel authorisation (eTA).
A further 74 destinations are listed as requiring a visa in advance. The access categories reconcile with the mobility score, as 80 visa-free, 39 facilitated-entry and five eTA destinations total 124.
Europe and Oceania show distinct access patterns
Europe records the highest visa-free share among the major regions in the report for Tongan passport holders. Of 47 European destinations, 39 are listed as visa-free, equivalent to 83.0%. One destination, Russia, is placed in the visa-on-arrival or facilitated-entry category, while the United Kingdom is listed under eTA. Six European destinations require a visa, representing 12.8% of the regional total.
Within Oceania, four of 13 destinations are visa-free and seven fall under visa on arrival or other facilitated-entry arrangements. Two destinations require a visa, giving the region a 30.8% visa-free share, a 53.8% facilitated-entry share and a 15.4% visa-required share. Separately, Tonga is ranked eighth among 14 countries in the report’s Oceania passport ranking.
Caribbean access contrasts with the Gulf and Central Asia
The Caribbean is another relatively open region for the Tongan passport in the dataset. Twelve of 16 destinations are visa-free, or 75.0%, while one destination is in the facilitated-entry category and one requires an eTA. Two Caribbean destinations require a visa. In the broader North America grouping, which includes Caribbean and Central American destinations, 13 of 23 are visa-free, one is facilitated-entry, one requires an eTA and eight require a visa.
The six Gulf countries are all recorded in the visa-required category, producing a 100.0% visa-required result for that grouping. Central Asia records four visa-required destinations out of five, with Uzbekistan in the facilitated-entry category. In Asia as a whole, eight of 50 destinations are visa-free, 10 are available through visa on arrival or other facilitated arrangements, one requires an eTA and 31 require a visa.
Other ranking contexts place Tonga second among constitutional monarchies
Beyond the global and continental tables, the report compares Tonga with countries sharing selected institutional or international-group characteristics. Tonga places second among four constitutional monarchies, 25th among 56 Commonwealth countries, 32nd among 132 G77 countries and 73rd among 159 World Trade Organization members. Among 60 countries grouped by English as an official language, Tonga is ranked 26th.
Inbound access and reciprocity are measured separately
The report gives Tonga a welcoming rank of 114th among 199 countries, a measure that concerns the ease with which foreign passport holders can enter Tonga rather than where Tongan passport holders can travel. The visa requirements for entering Tonga therefore represent the opposite direction of travel from the passport ranking and are treated separately in the report.
The reciprocity section identifies 10 countries whose passport holders can enter Tonga visa-free, with electronic permission or through visa on arrival, while Tongan passport holders face a visa requirement for those countries. A second list contains 65 countries whose passport holders require a visa for Tonga while Tongan passport holders receive visa-free, electronic-authorisation or facilitated-entry access in the other direction. The report presents these as reciprocity signals without assigning a political or diplomatic explanation.
Stay periods and additional entry procedures vary by destination
The destination-level entries also show that access conditions differ even within the same broad category. The 39 European visa-free destinations displayed in the report carry 90-day stay periods, while the United Kingdom’s eTA entry is shown with a 180-day period. In Oceania, Fiji and Vanuatu are listed as visa-free for 120 days, while several facilitated-entry destinations carry periods ranging from 30 to 90 days.
The report also records additional procedures attached to selected destinations. Examples include arrival cards for Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand; an e-ticket for the Dominican Republic; a tourist card for Suriname; pre-registration for Côte d’Ivoire; and tourist registration for Seychelles. Several destinations in the facilitated-entry and visa-required groups are also marked as having an eVisa available, which is why the report does not treat every facilitated-entry case simply as visa on arrival.
Taken together, the data show a Tongan passport profile with 124 destinations accessible without a conventional visa obtained in advance, compared with 74 destinations where a visa is required. The regional distribution is uneven: visa-free access is particularly broad in Europe and the Caribbean, while all six Gulf countries and four of five Central Asian destinations are recorded as visa-required. The separate inbound and reciprocity measures provide an additional view of how Tonga’s entry rules compare with the treatment of Tongan travellers abroad.
