Tonga National University (TNU) and Massey University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at creating new opportunities for collaboration in teaching, research and the development of staff and students.

TNU said the agreement was formally signed by its Vice-Chancellor, Dr Giulio Masasso Pāunga, and Massey University Vice-Chancellor Professor Pierre Venter.

The partnership has particular significance for TNU’s School of Agriculture, with the two universities expected to explore closer collaboration in an area directly linked to Tonga’s education, skills and agricultural needs.

TNU said the MoU would also provide opportunities for wider cooperation in teaching, research, and staff and student development.

Professor Palatasa Havea, Dean of Pacific Student Success at Massey University, was also present for the signing.

The agreement comes as TNU continues to develop its role as Tonga’s national university with programmes spanning education, science and technology, agriculture, maritime studies, engineering, health and other fields.

For Massey, the partnership adds to its international and Pacific engagement. Professor Venter became Massey’s Vice-Chancellor in February 2026 and has emphasised the university’s focus on connecting education, research and practical outcomes.

The details of the MoU, including specific programmes, research projects, student exchanges or implementation timelines, were not yet available for this report.

The partnership nevertheless establishes a framework for the two universities to develop those opportunities, particularly for TNU’s agriculture programmes and wider academic development.
