The 2026 Tonga Secondary School Football Competition ended with high drama at the Loto-Tonga Soka Centre, where ‘Apifo’ou College successfully defended its Under-18 boys title after a tense penalty shootout against Tonga College.

The headline final finished 3–3 after regulation time, with Tonga College forcing penalties through a dramatic late equaliser. ‘Apifo’ou held their nerve to win the shootout 5–4, securing back-to-back championships and extending their strong recent record in secondary school football.

Tonga Football had earlier described the finals as the culmination of “weeks of football”, with six championship matches scheduled across the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 divisions for boys and girls.

Several finals were decided by the narrowest of margins. Tonga College claimed the Under-14 boys title after defeating ‘Apifo’ou on penalties, while ‘Apifo’ou retained the Under-16 boys championship in another shootout victory over Tonga College.

In the girls’ divisions, Tonga Side School were crowned Under-14 champions. ‘Apifo’ou College produced a dominant display to win the Under-16 girls title against Takuilau College, and Liahona High School secured consecutive Under-18 girls championships with another convincing victory over Takuilau.

School football remains one of Tonga’s strongest grassroots sporting pathways, with many national representatives first emerging through inter-school competitions.

The annual tournament attracts strong support from students, families and alumni, and is widely regarded as an important development platform for future talent.

Tonga Football has not yet announced the dates for the 2027 competition.
