Why Tanzanians ignored President Ruto’s daughter wedding in Mwanza

The wedding should have made Headlines.

It didn’t.

Blame it on Tundu Lissu?

Tanzanians largely ignored the wedding ceremony in which Charlene Ruto, the daughter of Kenyan President William Ruto, was tying the knot with Isaya Yunge a young tech entrepreneur from Mwanza.

Most Tanzanians, including the local media and online platforms were instead focused on the Court Case Ruling involving Tundu Lussu the Chairperson of the main Opposition Party, CHADEMA.

Lissu, the charismatic politician and activist had been charged with treason in a case which ran for over 18 months, before the jury retrograded the decision during the final ruling.

Lissu was sentenced to serve four years in jail for ‘incitement,’ instead, with treason case being dropped.

The legal matter which took place on Friday, November 6, seemed to totally overshadow the wedding ceremony of the daughter of the Kenyan President which was also taking place in Tanzania and attended by the Head of State himself.

The wedding ceremony was held in Mwanza, Tanzania, but the court case took place in Dar-es-salaam.

The other thing is that, in Tanzania is a tradition that most weddings, take place on Saturdays, so the Friday event somehow turned out to be rather strange.

The wedding event in Tanzania’s lake Zone region of Mwanza, saw Ms Charlene William Ruto exchange vows with Isaya Yunge, the Tanzanian founder of SomaApps Technologies, a platform dedicated to connecting African students with scholarship opportunities.

The Friday wedding follows the previously held traditional Kalenjin engagement ceremony, known as Koito, which took place on August 8, 2026, at the Ruto family’s Intonna Heritage Farm in Kilgoris, Narok County and which drew bigger and better attention from the media of both countries.

Charlene Ruto has been in the public eye as the daughter of President William Ruto, who has been the head of state for the East African country since September 2022.

She has gained attention not only for her family ties but also for her involvement in various social initiatives.

Recently, she celebrated her bridal shower in Nairobi, which featured a white and purple theme and was attended by family, including her sister Stephanie.

The wedding in Mwanza City was also attended by notable figures, including President William Ruto himself, the kenya First Lady and Kapseret Member of Parliament, Oscar Sudi, amidst heightened security measures in the region.

The high-profile union has drawn significant media attention in Kenya but certainly not in Tanzania the country where it was staged in the first place as people there seemed to be busy with something else during the event.

The wedding was still reflecting the intersection of political and social spheres in Kenya and Tanzania
