How Green Technologies Help Businesses and Farmers in Tajikistan

Demonstration sites in Devastich and Kanibadam will show farmers and entrepreneurs how solar energy and water-saving technologies work in practice.

The official opening of two new demonstration sites for green technologies took place in the Sughd region, created as part of the second phase of the “Green Economy Financing Facility” (GEFF II) Program in Tajikistan.

The initiative is funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) with support from the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Korea.

The GEFF II Program facilitates the country’s transition to a green economy by providing financing for the implementation of modern energy, water, and resource-saving technologies through partner financial institutions: Arvand Bank, Humo Bank, the Investment and Credit Bank of Tajikistan (ICB), and Imon International Bank.

The program supports the development of sustainable entrepreneurship and effective land resource management, as well as helps businesses and the agricultural sector mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the EBRD, the Investment and Credit Bank of Tajikistan, Imon International Bank, local authorities, technology suppliers, entrepreneurs, and farmers.

Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture

The first demonstration site was opened in the Devastich district for a sub-borrower of Imon International Bank — the dehkan-farmer enterprise named after B. Narzulloev, specializing in intensive orchards.

The site features modern green technologies: a drip irrigation system that significantly reduces water consumption and increases irrigation efficiency; a solar energy system to provide the facility with renewable energy; a geomembrane reservoir for efficient water storage.

The comprehensive application of these solutions enhances the farm’s resilience to climate changes, improves water resource management, and increases productivity.

Modern Solutions for Reliable Energy Supply

The second demonstration site was opened in the city of Kanibadam for a sub-borrower of the Investment and Credit Bank of Tajikistan (ICB) — the public catering enterprise “Oshkhonai Turdiboy,” which serves about 300 visitors daily and requires stable energy supply for uninterrupted operation, especially in the winter period.

A hybrid solar photovoltaic system is installed at the facility, providing the enterprise with renewable energy and significantly reducing electricity costs.

The main advantages of the system include the use of environmentally friendly solar energy, reduced electricity expenses, increased energy independence, stable energy supply year-round, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The demonstration site allows entrepreneurs and visitors to familiarize themselves with the practical results of implementing solar technologies and assess their economic efficiency.

Platform for Learning and Experience Sharing

The demonstration sites are part of a large-scale EBRD initiative to promote green technologies and sustainable solutions in Tajikistan. These platforms are open for learning and experience sharing, where entrepreneurs, farmers, and representatives of the financial sector can get acquainted with modern technologies, evaluate their effectiveness, and acquire practical skills for their implementation.

The opening of new demonstration sites in Kanibadam and Devastich will expand access to information about green technologies, increase their demand among local businesses and farms, and contribute to the further development of the green economy in Tajikistan.
