Archaeological treasures from Tajikistan to go on display in Rome

An international exhibition titled “Tajikistan — the Land of Unique Heritage” will open in Rome on October 20, 2026, marking the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan’s independence, according to the National Museum of Tajikistan.

The museum says it will be its first international exhibition project of this scale in Rome.

The exhibition will feature archaeological finds and other items of historical and cultural heritage discovered at some of Tajikistan’s best-known archaeological and architectural sites.

Among them are artefacts from Takhti Sangin, ancient Panjakent, the Buddhist monastery of Ajina Teppa and other historical sites across the country.

The exhibits span a period from the 6th century BC to the 20th century and are intended to showcase key stages in the history and cultural development of the Tajik people.

The exhibition aims to introduce an international audience to Tajikistan’s ancient history and its rich archaeological and cultural heritage. Organizers also hope the project will strengthen cultural ties between Tajikistan and Italy and expand cooperation between museums and academic institutions in the two countries.

Visitors will see examples of material culture from different historical periods, ranging from antiquity to more recent centuries.

Preparations for the exhibition have already been discussed during working meetings between representatives of Tajikistan and Italy.

Participants included Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Italy Jamoliddin Ubaidullo, National Museum Director Zoirsho Ibrohimzoda, Museo delle Civiltà Director Luana Toniolo and other representatives of the Italian side.

The talks covered the choice of exhibition space, exhibition design, logistics, insurance and the safe transportation of museum objects. The sides also discussed a promotional campaign in Rome and preparations for the official opening ceremony.
