Apartment building planned on site of Nurek fire; victims promised free housing

Authorities in the city of Nurek have announced plans to construct a 12-story apartment building on the site of a residential house that was destroyed by fire in the village of Langar earlier this week. The developer behind the project has pledged to provide free apartments to affected families on the first two floors of the new building.

An official source within the Nurek city administration told Asia-Plus on June 9 that documentation for the land plot is currently being processed.

“The affected residents agreed to the entrepreneur’s proposal. They are temporarily staying with relatives. The entrepreneur who will build the new residential complex has also provided them with food, clothing, and other essential assistance,” the source said.

Asia-Plus has not yet been able to independently confirm the views of the affected residents or obtain their comments regarding the proposed arrangement.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of June 7 in a two-story wooden apartment building in Langar village. The blaze completely destroyed 16 residential units, leaving 14 families without homes.

According to a representative of the Nurek city administration, preliminary findings indicate that the fire was caused by deteriorated electrical wiring within the building.

The full extent of the damage has not yet been determined. Local authorities say an assessment of the losses is ongoing.
