Well-known American extreme athlete, mountaineer, and adventurer Matt Dawson died during an ascent of Ismoil Somoni Peak — the highest summit in Tajikistan and the entire former Soviet Union. This was reported by People magazine.
The tragedy occurred on August 15 during an expedition in the Pamir Mountains. According to data from Tajikistan’s Committee for Emergency Situations, the 47-year-old U.S. citizen fell from a slope at an altitude of approximately 5,800 meters. As a result of the fall, the mountaineer sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
According to Orif Nozimyon, the press secretary of the Committee for Emergency Situations, Dawson fell into a gorge approximately 70–80 meters deep. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
According to a representative of the agency, the American athlete was part of a group of 20 tourists organized by the Tajik tourism company “Қуллаҳои Тоҷик” (“Mountains of Tajikistan”). The body of the deceased mountaineer was delivered to Dushanbe on August 17.
Dawson’s relatives announced his death only on September 1, publishing a post on Instagram. The family wrote that he “completed his final ascent,” attempting to conquer Ismoil Somoni Peak, but a tragic accident occurred during the expedition.
Dawson traveled to Tajikistan as part of a charitable project to raise funds for ALS Network — an organization that helps people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His goal was not only to climb Ismoil Somoni Peak but also to draw attention to the challenges faced by people living with this disease.
ALS Network expressed deep sorrow over the athlete’s death.
“We are infinitely grateful to Dawson for bringing the ALS community with him on this journey. His dedication, generosity, and determination touched our organization and many people who followed his incredible efforts,” the organization said in a statement.
In the summer of 2026, the athlete planned to undertake a major three-peak challenge: to climb Ismoil Somoni Peak and Ozodi Peak in Tajikistan, as well as the eight-thousander Manaslu in the Himalayas.
According to People magazine, Dawson was born in 1978. Previously, he worked in finance, but after the death of his mother and a close person, he decided to change his life and fully dedicate himself to extreme adventures.
Over the past 15 years, he has engaged in mountaineering, polar and desert expeditions, as well as ocean rowing crossings. During his athletic career, Dawson set nine world records.
In May 2024, he entered the Guinness Book of World Records, setting a world record for the fastest foot crossing of the Mojave Desert in California. He completed the route in 7 days, 8 hours, and 45 minutes.
In 2018, Dawson founded Dawson’s Peak Foundation — a charitable foundation that organizes adventure projects around the world and supports athletes striving to inspire others to achieve their goals.
Ismoil Somoni Peak (formerly Peak Communism), with a height of 7,495 meters, is the highest mountain in Tajikistan and the former Soviet Union. The summit is considered one of the most challenging and prestigious peaks for mountaineers worldwide due to harsh weather conditions and technically difficult routes.
