Syria’s Fourth Criminal Court has set July 29 as the date for issuing a verdict in the trial of Wassim al-Assad, the first case to reach judgment under the country’s transitional justice framework, according to Radeef Mustafa, Director of the Accountability Department at the National Transitional Justice Commission.

The court, which holds jurisdiction over transitional justice cases, concluded its third hearing on Wednesday and adjourned to review the full case file before delivering its ruling later this month.

In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, Mustafa said the proceedings had reached a pivotal stage as the court moved into closing arguments. The public prosecution presented its final legal summary, drawing on evidence, witness testimony and investigative records. The defence team then delivered its pleadings, followed by a concluding statement from the defendant.

Mustafa stressed that Syria’s transitional justice process is unfolding in accordance with legal standards designed to safeguard the rights of all parties. He noted that the court’s work is grounded in documented evidence and judicial guarantees intended to reinforce public confidence in the rule of law, judicial independence and the state’s commitment to ending impunity. He added that serious crimes are being adjudicated before specialised courts strictly through established legal procedures, ensuring fairness for victims.

Wednesday’s session, presided over by Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan, was attended by representatives of national and international human rights organisations. It also included additional testimony from witnesses called by the public prosecution.

Wassim al-Assad faces several charges, including forming and leading irregular armed groups under the direction of Brigadier General Ghiath Dalla, formerly a senior commander in the Fourth Division led by Maher al-Assad under the previous regime. He is also accused of participating in military operations targeting civilian areas in Eastern Ghouta—particularly the town of Al-Mleiha—resulting in significant civilian casualties.
