Syria and Germany Sign Agreement to Form Joint Committee for Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Syria and Germany signed an agreement on Thursday establishing a Joint Syrian-German Committee designed to organise permanent cooperation between the two countries and reinforce bilateral relations on the basis of mutual interests and mutual respect.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, the Syrian side was represented at the signing ceremony by Qutaiba Qadish, Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The German side was represented by Geza Andreas von Geyr, State Secretary at the German Federal Foreign Office. The ceremony was held at the Tishreen Palace in Damascus.

Following the signing, the Joint Syrian-German Committee convened its inaugural session, co-chaired by Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan Shibani and the German State Secretary for Foreign Affairs. Senior officials and technical experts from both sides participated in discussions on mechanisms for expanding cooperation across several key sectors.

The committee has been tasked with coordinating bilateral efforts and overseeing the implementation of agreements in areas including economic recovery, reconstruction, investment, energy, transport, civil aviation, transitional justice, missing persons and the refugee file.

The establishment of the committee forms part of Syria’s broader effort to strengthen institutional international partnerships, ensure sustainable cooperation and advance the shared interests of both countries.
