Syria and Egypt Explore New Energy Partnership at Washington Forum

Syrian Minister of Energy Mohammad al-Bashir met on Tuesday with Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi to explore ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in energy, petroleum, and mineral resources. The meeting was held on the sidelines of Syria’s participation in the Global Energy Forum in Washington, D.C.

According to a statement from the Syrian Ministry of Energy, the talks centered on emerging opportunities in Syria, particularly in infrastructure rehabilitation and new investment projects. The ministers also discussed the future of Syrian-Egyptian energy partnerships aimed at supporting development efforts and modernizing critical infrastructure.

The ministry added that both sides agreed to continue working toward identifying joint development projects that would strengthen energy networks and create high-value investment opportunities beneficial to both countries.

For his part, Minister Badawi emphasized that relations between Syria and Egypt are rooted in longstanding historical and fraternal ties, providing a strong foundation for expanded cooperation—especially in the energy sector. He noted that shared interests and a common vision for Arab economic integration open broad prospects for advancing partnerships in oil and natural gas.

Badawi highlighted Egypt’s advanced capabilities in the oil and gas industry, including extensive expertise and a well-developed infrastructure of gas transmission networks, processing facilities, and liquefaction plants. These assets, he said, position Egypt to play a significant role in supporting Syria’s energy projects in the coming phase. Strengthening cooperation, he added, would enhance regional energy security, promote integration, and contribute positively to Syria’s reconstruction and sectoral recovery.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two ministers agreed to maintain close coordination and consider establishing a joint technical mechanism to follow up on the implementation of agreed-upon projects and future opportunities.

Minister al-Bashir is leading the Syrian delegation to the Global Energy Forum. On Monday, he met with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright to discuss bilateral cooperation and potential investment opportunities for American companies in Syria’s energy and infrastructure sectors.

In a related development, al-Bashir announced that U.S. companies have already begun taking practical steps toward entering the Syrian market. In a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter), he welcomed the growing interest from the American private sector, describing it as part of a broader effort to expand economic cooperation and support national reconstruction.

The minister reaffirmed Damascus’s commitment to building sustainable economic partnerships focused on technology transfer, job creation, and long-term stability to support the recovery of the national economy.
