Elders’ Visit to Villa Somalia Signals Political Maneuvering for Hassan, Unease for Puntland Leadership

Mogadishu (WDN)- At a moment of deepening political rift between Puntland and the Federal Government, a delegation of traditional elders from Bari region quietly walked into Villa Somalia and into a political storm.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s meeting with the Puntland elders may have been officially framed as a discussion on community needs and cooperation, but its timing tells a more consequential story.

With relations between Garowe and Mogadishu at their lowest point in years, the optics of the meeting were unmistakable: while Puntland’s leadership remains locked in confrontation with the federal center, figures from within its own traditional establishment are engaging directly with the presidency. The elders who met with the president included Beeldaaje Mohamed Beeldaaje Ismail, Beeldaaje Ismail Beeldaaje Yasin, Sultan Mursal Koonte, and Sultan Mahmoud Haji Abdullahi.

For President Hassan, it was a welcome political moment, an image of outreach, legitimacy, and federal reach beyond formal political standoffs. For Puntland’s President Said Abdullahi Deni, it is unlikely to be received with the same enthusiasm.

The elders who attended respected figures from Bari, were joined by politicians from the region, including opposition voices, further amplifying the perception that Mogadishu is widening its channels of influence inside Puntland at a time of formal disengagement.

The Federal Government’s statement emphasized development needs and cooperation. But beneath that language lies a deeper political signal: engagement does not wait for reconciliation at the leadership level.

Puntland, which has accused the Federal Government of undermining the federal system and centralizing power, now finds itself confronting a more complex reality, one where political line is no longer drawn solely between governments, but increasingly within constituencies themselves.

In that sense, the meeting was more than a routine consultation. It was a reminder that in Somalia’s fractured political landscape, influence is rarely static—and moments that appear ceremonial can carry strategic weight.

For Mogadishu, it was a good day. For Garowe, it may mark the beginning of a more complicated one.
