A criminal complaint filed by the director of Montenegro’s National Security Agency, ANB, against two investigative journalists over a report concerning alleged irregularities in the agency’s recruitment and security vetting procedures has been criticised by media organisations and press freedom advocates.

The complaint was filed by ANB director Ivica Janovic against journalists Djurdja Radulovic and Andrea Perisic from the Centre for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro, CIN-CG, following the publication of an investigation examining security clearance procedures and hiring practices within the intelligence agency. (Perisic and Radulovic have also both worked for BIRN on other projects unrelated to this investigation.)

According to CIN-CG, Janovic accused the journalists and other unidentified individuals of disclosing classified information in a May 31 story headlined ‘Security Checks in the ANB: Are People Being Hired According to the Wishes of the Powerful?’
