Hundreds of Albanian citizens have torn down the fence on Kakome beach in the south of the country, protesting against the privatisation of public coastal areas and a controversial luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner and the Trump family.
According to Albanian media reports, hundreds of residents from Nivice, Shen Vasil and other nearby settlements protested today on Kakome beach and dismantled parts of fences, guard huts and barbed wire that had blocked access to a section of the bay for more than 20 years.
The protesters said that beaches belong to the people, not oligarchs, chanting slogans such as “Albania is not for sale” and “Flamingo Revolution”. Videos published on the social media platform X show citizens removing fences and entering the restricted coastal area, expressing public opposition to plans that involve closing off part of the protected coastline for a private tourist complex.
This is part of a wider wave of protests in Albania against the privatisation of public assets and the influence of foreign investors on protected areas. The demonstrations have intensified due to plans to build a large resort in the south of the country, which critics describe as an example of corruption and the handing over of national resources to foreign interests at the expense of local communities and the environment.
The action at Kakome comes amid growing public dissatisfaction with the policies of Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government, which is accused of favouring major investors over the public interest. Protesters say they will continue their actions until further privatisation of the coastline is stopped.
