The Serbian Prime Minister, Đuro Macut, has announced that starting 17 August, insured individuals in Serbia will gain access to 18 new prescription drugs funded by the state. As he highlighted, the state is taking on the largest share of treatment costs that citizens previously had to cover entirely out of pocket.

Prime Minister Macut noted that the drug list will now include 16 new oral anticoagulants used for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, as well as for the treatment and prevention of recurrent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Additionally, two drugs for the treatment of heart failure are being added to the List. While primarily diabetes medications, clinical trials and practical application have shown them to be highly effective when prescribed to a specific group of patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction, he added.

For the 16 new oral anticoagulants, the state will cover 70 per cent of the costs, while citizens will pay a 30 per cent co-payment. This means that instead of paying roughly 1,700 to 6,000 dinars per pack as before, the patient co-payment will now be around 600 to 1,100 dinars.

For the two heart failure medications, the state will also absorb a substantial portion of the expenses. Patients previously paid approximately 2,500 to 4,500 dinars per pack; starting 17 August, their co-payment will drop to around 1,700 dinars.

Prime Minister Macut reminded the public that co-payments for drugs on List A1 were significantly reduced as of 1 August, a government measure that covers a total of 769 medications.
