Tributes have poured in from across the professional wrestling world following the death of former WWE wrestler Papaliʻitele Max Amata Taogaga, better known to fans as Siva Afi. He was 77 years old.
His family confirmed his passing last week, with the news quickly spreading across social media.
The announcement was first shared by Steve Stasiak of Book Pro Wrestlers, who paid tribute to the Samoan wrestling star.
In a heartfelt statement, Stasiak described Siva Afi as a gifted athlete and charismatic performer who was admired for his unforgettable Samoan presentation, spectacular fire knife dancing, and natural presence both inside and outside the wrestling ring.
“Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of speaking with many of Siva Afi’s peers, and one thing was always consistent: they spoke of him with genuine respect and affection.
He was remembered not only as a talented performer, but as a kind, humble man who left a positive impression on the people who knew him”.
Born on April 28, 1949, in Samoa, Taogaga trained in New Zealand under legendary promoter Steve Rickard and wrestling icon Peter Maivia before making his professional debut in 1974.
He later moved to the United States, where he made a name for himself in Hawaii’s 50th State Big Time Wrestling, competing as Siva Afi, a name that translates to “Fire Dance.”
During his time there, he captured the promotion’s heavyweight championship and later won the Pacific International Championship.
Throughout his career, Siva Afi wrestled in several major promotions around the world, including Stampede Wrestling, Polynesian Pro Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now known as WWE.
One of the biggest matches of his career came on August 3, 1985, when he challenged legendary champion Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in front of more than 12,000 fans at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii.
The event also featured wrestling greats including Antonio Inoki, Andre the Giant, Dusty Rhodes, Jimmy Snuka, and Bruiser Brody.
Siva Afi joined the WWF in early 1986, where he became well known to wrestling fans during the late 1980s. He performed under several ring names throughout his career, including Superfly Afi, Sivi Afi, Toma, and High Chief Afi, and frequently teamed with fellow Islanders Haku and Tama.
Away from professional wrestling, Taogaga also worked as a stuntman and served as a bodyguard for Hollywood actor Burt Reynolds.
Following his wrestling career, Taogaga faced legal troubles in the United States. He was convicted in 1998 on charges including aggravated burglary, robbery, and kidnapping related to a 1996 incident in Ohio and served approximately ten years in prison.
According the sources said, Siva Afi leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Samoa’s pioneering professional wrestlers, remembered for proudly showcasing Samoan culture on the international stage and inspiring generations of Pacific Island wrestlers who followed.
