By: Jasmine Netzler, Gvt Press. Apia Samoa. Samoa Airways has welcomed back its oldest Twin Otter aircraft, 5W-FAY, after a complete overhaul and refurbishment by Unity Aviation Canada Ltd.
Built in 1980, the aircraft was purchased by Samoa in 1998. The 46-year-old aircraft has been in operation for 28 years.
The refurbishment work that began in September 2025, is expected to extend the aircraft’s operational life by another 30 years.
“The refurbishment included major structural repairs and upgrades to ensure the highest standards of safety, reliability, and passenger comfort,” states the airline.
The aircraft was officially welcomed during a ceremony at the Samoa Airways Engineering Hangar at Faleolo Airport, attended by government leaders, including Acting Prime Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio’o, the Speaker of Parliament, and representatives from Unity Aviation Canada.

The Acting Prime Minister said the refurbishment is an important investment that strengthens aviation safety, improves connectivity, supports tourism and trade, and helps develop local aviation expertise.
The refurbishment of both 5W-FAY and 5W-FAW cost approximately SAT $22 million, funded entirely through Samoa Airways’ own revenue without borrowing.

Unity Aviation Canada Accountable Executive, Gale Goodwin, said every aircraft delivered reflects the company’s commitment to safety, quality, and trust.
He thanked Samoa Airways and the Government of Samoa for their confidence and emphasised the importance of aviation in connecting island nations, supporting healthcare, tourism, commerce, and economic growth.
The event ended with a special awards ceremony to acknowledge the airlines long serving staff and those who have been with Samoa Airways for over 20 years of continuous service.
